Chinese apothecary (herbal medicine) chest. Every label names an ingredient from traditional Chinese medicine, two per drawer (one on each side of the pull). Some I can read:

• 黃芩 / 丹皮: Baikal skullcap root, tree-peony root bark
• 大黃 / 米殼: rhubarb root, poppy husk
• 當歸: angelica root (dang gui)
• 菟絲 / 故紙: dodder seed, psoralea (bu gu zhi)
• 廣皮 / 木香: aged tangerine peel, costus root
• 訶子 / 枳實: terminalia fruit, bitter orange
• 半夏 / 菖蒲: pinellia, sweet flag rhizome
• 西杞 / 玉果 / 內金: goji berry, nutmeg, chicken gizzard lining
• 升麻, 黃精, 青蒿, 木賊, 雄黃, 炙草: bugbane, Solomon's seal, sweet wormwood, horsetail, realgar, honey-fried licorice

The pharmacist would weigh out a prescription from dozens of drawers.
